Calgary Hay Bales

I was driving back from Banff, following my friend Heath O’Fee back into Calgary.  Just outside of Calgary I noticed these farm fields with dark green grass and contrasting golden bales of hay across on the other side of the highway. It’s one of those times when, if my wife was sitting in the passenger seat she’d be shaking her head as I took the next exit and headed back on the other side of the highway to the farm fields. I drove around the farms looking for the right shot and finally was able to capture this image with my Canon EF 70-200 mm f/2.8 IS L lens. This lens has become one of my favorite lenses in my bag. I struggled with the lens at first, but I have really grown to enjoy the lens even doing landscape work. I love how it isolates the subject and gives you an intimate perspective on the subject.

  1. Terrific shot, Rick. You’re right, the contrast in colors is so eye-catching in this landscape shot. Nice work.

These always reminded me of shredded wheat (the cereal). LOL

  2. Beautiful capture. I love good quality zoom lenses. I recently got the Nikon 28-300 and the thing is sharp as a tac. Love the slight bokeh you have. That really does isolate the subject, even at 200mm far away!!
