The Colorado Fall Color Tour for 2016 is now open for registration. Tour space is very limited and will be split up into two tours – Aspen and Crested Butte, Colorado. This is a discovery year for me so cost is low if you want to do some discovery work with me this year.

Hope you can join Chris and I this year!

County Road 9

One of the most beautiful roads in the Uncompahgre Wilderness during the fall is the West Dallas Creek Road, or County Road 9. There is an amazing view of Sneffels Mountain Range towering over the West Fork of the Dallas Creek, colorful scrub oak and the surrounding valley full of large groves of aspens. It’s one of the highlights of my Fall Tour and I look forward to seeing this area every year.

Lizard Lake – Marble, Colorado Fall Photography

Last week’s tour took us up to Crystal Mill to capture the iconic Colorado mill during the fall season. It was a jarring ride and not sure I really want to do it again. There isn’t much scenery along the way and can be hit or miss with fall colors at the mill so you are taking a chance. They do have the property fenced off now so the only way to capture the scene now is from up above the river.

Along the way down however we came up to Lizard Lake and the conditions were perfect. The light was low on the horizon and the water was still giving us a great mirror of the scene with the fall colors. You just never know what you will encounter, but after a long bumpy ride up to the mill this was a welcome scene!

Diamonds in the Rough | Colorado Fall Colors

The Colorado Fall Color Tour starts in 10 days!  Colors are already starting to turn here in Colorado and I’m really getting excited for this year’s tour.

This year we have Armando Martinez out starting off the tour with a wonderful Lightroom/Photoshop training session and we’ll end the tour with a Full Moon!  It will be one of the biggest moon’s of the year!

Here’s a glimpse of things to come.  One of the images from the Capitol Peak area near Aspen.

Standing Tall

I’m getting so excited for fall colors!  It’s just around the corner!  Only 17 more days for the Colorado Fall Colors Tour.

I’ve actually had one opening free up on the tour if anyone is interested. Just contact me for more details. We are starting in Aspen this year with a Photoshop Lightroom class and finishing up with 3 days in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride.

I think this is my favorite time of the year with the crisp mornings and warm afternoons and shimmering gold leaves of the aspen trees against the beautiful mountain backdrops of the Rocky Mountains. This image was taken along McClure Pass in the Aspen Snowmass Wilderness. The tops of these aspen trees towered above the hillside along Captiol Peak mixed in among the deep green pine trees. I used my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L IIs to compress the images isolating the group of golden aspens standing tall on the hillside.

Fall Fireworks

Many landscapes are often captured with at wide-angle or at with a standard lens, but sometimes to really capture some of the details I’ve grown quite fond of using my 70-200mm lens to capture landscapes.  It allows you to zoom in on scenes and compresses the landscape to bring out the detail you would not normally see with a standard or wide-angle lens.

This image was taken along Capitol Creek Road in the Snowmass Wilderness last fall.  I call it Fall Fireworks because the small groves of aspen appear like burst of fireworks along the rolling hills. I shot this from atop a hillside looking out over the valley of wonderful fall colors and this grouping of aspen groves leading up to Capital peak caught my eye. It was just some amazing pops of yellow, gold, green and orange among the natural turf of the hills surrounding it.

Colorado Fall Color Tour

The Colorado Fall Color Tour for 2015 is now set and ready for you to participate! Early interest is at an all time high so there are only a few spots left in the tour. This year I’m combining forces with The Photo Frontier and Armando Martinez will be helping me lead the tour. He’s a master Lightroom and Photoshop expert and is waiting to give out his tips and tricks during the tour.

This year again I’m limiting the number of tour participants so you can get personal instruction and help when needed. The tour will begin in Aspen this year and head south again to our main base in Telluride, Colorado, one of the top Adventure Cities in the world. You’ll have 3 and 1/2 days of out in the field shooting.
Head over to the Tour page for more information and to reserve your spot in this year’s tour.

Look forward to seeing you this fall here in Colorado!

Ashcroft Mountain

One of the most scenic roads just outside of the Maroon Bells/Maroon Lake Recreation area is down along Castle Creek Road.  Castle Creek Road takes you down along a scenic drive to the ghost town of Ashcroft and to a beautiful view of Ashcroft Mountain. After sunrise at Maroon Lake, we headed down to Ashcroft. The clouds and fog were still settled over the valley, but it didn’t take away from the beautiful view of Ashcroft Mountain along with the fall colors of the aspens.  Here’s a wonderful fall view of Ashcroft Mountain.

Colorful Graze – Wilson Mesa

I was looking for a peaceful image and came across this image from my fall tour. Just as we were positioning to capture the sunset at Wilson Mesa near Telluride, Colorado a horse came out to pasture for its evening graze.  Just a nice peaceful image set against the fall colors.

Have a great weekend!

Capitol Creek Road

Capitol Creek Road takes you through some amazing aspen groves and along some beautiful farmland in the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness and at the end of the road are some amazing view of Capitol Peak. This past fall tour the aspen colors were amazing, but rain and fog didn’t make for a great view of Capitol Peak. The road turns in to a single track dirt trails enough for a single vehicle to pass and with the rain made for a very slick trail this year so much so that we had to stop at the first clearing. The Suburban just wouldn’t make it up to the 2nd clearing.

The road was lined with golden aspen leaves and made for a great scene that we had to stop can capture. Her is my image of Capitol Creek Road. The road was a serene and quiet with an aspen leaves slowly falling off the trees onto the ground.
