Weld County Wall Cloud

I decided to head back a couple of years to a storm I chased with Ryan Wright and Chase Shipley through Weld County just south of Greeley Colorado.  Chase had found this awesome road on top of a hill looking directly into a slow-moving wall cloud coming toward us.  It was dark and really tough to tell it was coming with eyesight but with technology looking at the radar and the use of long exposures we came out with some amazing photos of the wall cloud forming.

I’m not sure why I never processed this image, but sometimes the tools and knowledge you have just don’t allow you to work on it.  We’ve had some recent storm activity and with an itch to get out and chase a storm again I pulled these images from couple of years ago.  I noticed this one and decided to work it again and it just came to life.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Miller Cabin | Grand Teton National Park

This is Miller Cabin.  This cabin sits just outside of the National Elk Refuge near Grand Teton National Park along the road to Flat Creek. It’s a wonderful peaceful property with great views of Teton Mountain out behind the Elk Refuge.

Miller Cabin was the cabin of  Robert A. Miller the first superintendent of  Teton National Monument. Miller took up residence in Jackson Hole in 1865 and then eventually settled along Flat Creek. He helped organize the town of Jackson back in 1901 and was the president of the local bank. His wife actually served two terms as Mayor back in the 1920’s.  Miller was chosen to be the administrator of the Teton Division of the Yellowstone Timberland Reserve and eventually established the National Elk Refuge in 1912 near where this cabin resides.  Miller ran the refuge from the house near this cabin. This cabin served as Miller’s home before his time with the Timberland Reserve when he was with the Forest Service. This cabin is now maintained the U.S. Forest Service.

Year of the Horse

Today is the Lunar New Year and the Chinese Year of the Horse. The horse is part of a 12-year-cycle of animals that make up the Chinese zodiac. These interact with the five elements: wood, metal, fire, water, earth. 2014 is the year of the wood horse.  So Happy New Year or in Chinese, pronounced: Gong Xi Fa Cai(Mandarin) and Gong Hey Fat Choy(Cantonese)!  Denver Broncos fans, it is the year of the Horse so Go Broncos!  Have a Have a Happy New Year and enjoy the Super Bowl this weekend!

Oh and information on this image:  I captured this horse in a pasture in Grand Teton National Park, grazing among the wildflowers near a stand of aspen trees.  Wonderful scene and some beautiful horses.  I used a long lens and captured this horse from a distance with a shallow depth of field.

12 Best Landscapes 2013 – Part 4

We stay in Colorado for the rest of the journey. Here’s image number 7 and it comes from Rocky Mountain National Park. I was conducting a photo tour in Rocky Mountain National Park this past September and it so happens that week we had our 500 year rain and flooding which made for a rain filled photography tour. We were actually lucky to get out of the park the last day since the three main roads on the eastern side of the park were washed out. We ended up going over Trail Ridge Road to Grand Lake. The funny thing about the Western side of the park just over the Continental Divide was the weather was quite pleasant and gave me a chance to do some exploring on the side of the park I visit the least.

I think this year I’m going to spend some more time on the west side because there is some amazing scenery in the Kawuneeche Valley and Never Summer Mountains are also an awesome site! This image is Adams Falls and can be reached along the East Inlet Trail that feeds into Grand Lake. There is some beautiful open meadows along this trail.  Water was plentiful making for a full waterfall with vibrant green foliage!

Very close to Denver is a state park called Roxborough. The western edges of Denver along the foothills brings some amazing formation of red rocks. One of the most famous formations is the amphitheater named Red Rocks. Just south of the amphitheater is Roxborough State Park which is just behind a hogback. You would never know it was there from driving along the roads, but you get back behind the hogback and there are some amazing jaw dropping scenery! I captured it one morning just after sunrise with blue tones mixed with storm clouds that really offset the reddish-orange rocks making for an amazing scene! Roxborough Park is image #8 in my 12 Best Landscapes 2013.

12 Best Landscapes 2013 – Part 3

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. I was able to spend some time with my family and do some relaxing. I hope that your holiday season is enjoyable and relaxing!

We stay in Grand Teton National Park today with an image of Schwabacher Landing. It’s a beaver pond along the Snake River and in the morning gives you the most amazing view of the Tetons along with an incredible reflection on the still water. This year it took a little more effort to reach the landing since the road was closed off due to lack of funding, but it was definitely worth the hike because Ryan Wright and I had the landing to ourselves and witnessed an amazing sunrise!

We are halfway done today with my 12 Best Landscapes 2013 and the 6th image brings us back to Colorado. I try to get out on the Eastern Plains of Colorado at least twice a year and it never seems to disappoint. This time it was after storm activity the day before and the morning sky was active with clouds as they continued to move east toward the Kansas border. The formation of swirling clouds and the warm hues from the sunrise created for some amazing contrasts and incredible orange tones. I found this abandoned barn and windmill that made for an amazing silhouette against the morning sky.

12 Best Landscapes 2013 – Part 2

This is part 2 of 12 Best Landscapes 2013 and I continue on today with 2 more of my favorite landscapes. We stay in the Grand Teton National Park area. My first image today was however not in the National Park, but on the west side of mountain range on the Idaho Side of the Teton mountain range. This image was taken from Driggs, Idaho and a view that was a first for me this year. It challenges for one of the best views of Grand Teton Mountain I’ve ever seen. The west side of the mountain range is surrounded by farmland the mountain is magnified as it standup among the rolling grassland on the Idaho Side of the Tetons.

Image number 4 takes us back into Grand Teton National Park, but this time at night along Oxbow Bend. Oxbow Bend is a quiet bend in the Snake River with amazing views of Mt. Moran and is known for some amazing sunrises with spectacular reflections on the Snake River. The river at that bend is slow-moving and makes for glass like water to give off that amazing reflection. Ryan Wright and I went there at night this time to capture some stars and the Milky Way. Here is the Milky Way and the stars reflecting off of the glass-like water at Oxbow Bend.

12 Best Landscapes 2013

Starting today I’m giving you a look back at my year and giving you my 12 favorite landscapes for 2013. I’ll be posting two of my favorites each day, except on Christmas, from now till the end of the year with a special post on New Years!  Let’s get started with the 12 Best Landscapes 2013!

The journey began this year with one of my favorite locations, Moab, Utah.  Moab is located just outside two National Parks, Arches and Canyonlands and some of the most scenic places in the county.  This year it was the host location for the NXNW photo blogger’s tour and Justin Balog and myself were host to some great photobloggers.  Be sure to check out their blogs and  their beautiful work. (Michael Criswell, Mark GarbowskiBob Lussier, Chris Nitz,  Dave Wilson). Yes we experiences some amazing scenery, but mostly creating friendships that will last a lifetime.

One of the iconic locations we visited was Delicate Arch and so we wanted to capture it at sunset and then hang around and so some light painting of the arch. We happened to run into another tour group that was going to light paint the arch as we’ll  and it just happened to be led by non other than photographer Dave Black. Such a fun evening outing in the desert southwest.  Here’s the result of that evening’s excursion, a light painting of Delicate Arch.

My travels this year then took me back to Grand Teton National Park with photographer Ryan Wright.  We hit Grand Teton early in the summer and was able to capture much the Tetons with snow-capped peaks. The Tetons are such a spectacular mountain range and so different front the mountains here in Colorado. There are no foothills and the peaks just rise straight up in dramatic fashion.

One of my favorite icons is along Mormon Row and the iconic Thomas Moulton Barn. It’s just spectacular at sunrise and develops this patina finish as the sun rises in the morning. The Thomas Alma Moulton Barn celebrated its 100th Birthday this year! It’s such a beautiful site.  I never get tired of looking at it.

Moonrise over Arches

One of the things a full moon is not good for is capturing stars.  The full moon is like the sun and blows out the sky around it. I was in Arches National Park last year with the SWSX Photographers tour group back in April and it was a few days prior to a full moon.  We only had a few hours of night-time sky to capture the stars before the big moon came out.

Once the moon came out the stars began to dissipate, but I decided to shoot directly into the moon rise just over the arches and capture it like similar to a sunrise just as it peaked over a opening in the formations. The stars were still somewhat visible but it the bright moon created a silhouette affect for the formations and haloed over the rock formations like a sunrise.

This image kind of reminds me of the Christmas Star over the baby’s manger.  I hope you are all having a wonderful Holiday season! I’m rather enjoying some time off and spending time with my family and I hope you get to do the same.  Have a great week everyone!

Waterfall Banff National Park

I went back into my archives today and found this wonderful waterfall that I shot in Banff National Park. It just sparked many memories of a great trip into Canada and something I need to do again soon. The Banff area is just amazing with large glaciers and peaks that just rise straight up and tower over you. It’s like the Grand Tetons, but on both sides of you. The glaciers in the area make for some amazing lakes and waterfalls. I think I could have spent the entire day shooting this hillside filled with waterfalls that spilled down off the from Moraine Lake. So here’s today’s image – Hillside Waterfall Banff National Park.

Milky Way from Signal Mountain

I’m taking you back to Grand Teton National Park again today, but this time for a night-time image from Signal Mountain.  During the day up on Signal Mountain in the early summer months, the side of Signal Mountain is covered with wild flowers. The top of the mountain gives you a great view over the Teton Valley and a view of the Grand Teton Mountain Range. At Night, it’s a great place to get a large view of the sky over the Teton Valley.  This evening started out with some cloud cover but then some brief winds took the storm clouds away leaving the night sky filled with the Milky Way.

The lights in the bottom of the image come from the Jackson Lake Lodge area and also captured the International Space Station streaking across the sky. This is a 9-image stitch. The exposures were a little long for the 14mm lens so you can see some star movement in the images. I’m looking forward to the warm summer months again. Standing out in the dark of the night sure is more pleasant in the summer than in the winter.
