Kebler Pass

Having been in New York City all last week, I jetted back to Colorado on Saturday and then quickly unpacked and packed and headed for Crested Butte, Colorado and met up with Ryan Wright and Casey Shipley. It was about a 4 and 1/2 hour drive down from Denver and was hoping to make it to Kebler Pass for sunset.  I arrived to the overlook just as the sun was setting illuminating the trees.  It was a little hazy so we didn’t get the alpen glow I was hoping for, but the fall colors of the aspens were spectacular. Kebler Pass is so full of color and one of the reasons I love the Colorado Southwest Mountains this time of year.

Kebler Pass is has the largest aspen stand in the world. All the trees you see in this are one big living organism and all inter-connected. I captured this panorama of Kebler Pass. This small image in this blog post doesn’t do it justice. Click on the image for the Lightbox view.

Kebler Ferns

During my camping trip in the San Juan Mountains we (Ryan Wright and I) were driving around Kebler Pass and noticed an aspen patch with an amazing floor of Ferns.  Such a beautiful site of greenery among the whites of the aspen trees.  I thought I would share that with you today.

Kebler Pass

Some of the most amazing scenery down in the San Juan area is Kebler Pass.  It contains the 2nd largest grove of aspen in the world.  It’s definitely a place I’ll be visiting this fall. A storm front was coming in when we Ryan and I were at Kebler Pass, but was able to capture the sunset before the storm hit the area.  What an amazing sunset. Ruby Peak, Mount Owen and the Dike Ridge are on the prominent peaks in this image. That evening we had the fun of trying to sleep in our tents during 65 mph winds and rain.  Luckily our tents held up. This sunset made of for the lack of sleep that evening. Thanks to Ryan for allowing me to borrow his Singh Ray graduated ND filter.  The filter is on my purchase list now.
