Desert Sunset

There is something magical about the pastels I’ve seen in the desert southwest at sunset. This image was captured just outside of Wahweap Bay on Lake Powell. The canyon walls surrounding Lake Powell show the many layers of rock from the volcanic activity and form buttes and walls in the Glen Canyon Recreation area that created the contrasts against this pastel sunset. Be sure to click on the image to see the lightbox view and to see this image in large detail.

Sunrise at Dead Horse Point

Dead Horse Point is a small plateau standing 2000 ft. surrounded by sheer cliffs above a bend in the Colorado River.  Cowboys in the 19th Century used this area to round up wild horses because it was an easy place to fence off so horses wouldn’t run away.  The cowboys would then use this area to break horses, keep the good ones and then let the unwanted horses run back into the open range.  The legend has it that one time the horses for whatever reason didn’t leave and died from thirst, which is ironic since the Colorado River was in full view from the plateau.

You may also recognize this scene from the movie, Thelma and Louise (2:01:00 into the movie below). It’s an amazing overlook with views of the Colorado River below and Canyonlands National Park.

Horseshoe Bend

This is Horseshoe Bend near the town of Page, Arizona in the Glen Canyon Recreation Area.  It’s a bend in the Colorado River that looks like a horseshoe. Ryan and I reached the parking lot just before sunset and of course it required a hurried pace to the view point to capture this place at sunset. It’s only a 1/2 mile hike, but no one told me it would be up a sandy hill. I think I’ve had too many lattes and cookies lately so I was huffing and puffing.  It’s time to work on my fitness during the winter months 🙂 .

You have probably seen this view before.  I was looking for a unique view, but it came back to this traditional view.  I decided to do a vertical panorama and so this image is a combination of vertical images to capture more of the detail. I was lucky enough to capture a few planes streaking across the sky and a houseboat moving to a new location during my captures to add some interest and perspective to the scene.

Foggy Empire

I had a great view of the Empire State Building from my hotel room on my last visit to New York City.  One evening while I was there the fog rolled in during the evening and the Empire State Building,  illuminated in blue, lit up the fog as it was rolling into Midtown Manhattan.  I was able to capture this log exposure of the famous landmark through my hotel window.

Have a great weekend!

Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

Here in Denver we have been enjoying the warm spring weather. This past weekend we reached the mid 80’s and was getting used to the warm weather. Yesterday Mother Nature had another plan and provided us with a blanket of snow that will stay with us for a couple of days. I’m glad I fertilized the yard last night before the storm hit.

I’m still ready for the warm summer weather and so it had me looking back over my photo library from this past summer and I discovered this image. I can’t believe I never processed it, but sometimes it take a second look at an image to realize you have something worth sharing.

This image reminded me of one of the verses in a classic children’s prayer:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Lord, be with me through the night
And keep me ’til the morning light.

Pam and Dusty – Together Forever

I had a great photo session with Pam and Dusty this weekend!  They certainly have found a partner in each other that will last them the rest of their lives.  Instead of the normal photos I though I would share with you one of my favorite new portrait sales tools, Animoto videos.  It’s a great service, fully customizable to create your own personal videos and all the music and themes can be used for commercial use (Pro or Reseller Accounts).

Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep

It’s a busy week for me so I thought I would bring out the Big Ram today so I can power through my Wednesday.  It’s also the mascot for my Almer Mater, Colorado State University!  Go Rams! This was one of the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep Rams I captured this past fall just outside of Green River, Utah.  Have a great Wednesday!

An Evening in Butler Gulch

Some of you may remember my trek up to the top of Jones Pass last summer.  I thought I would share another image from down below in Butler Gulch.  This image was taken around 9pm that evening.  Justin Balog and I were capturing some long exposures and light trails of the vehicles still venturing up and down the Jones Pass Rd.  This image shows a truck’s light trails coming down from Jones Pass and a campsite in the valley below the top of the pass.  It was just one the wonderful Colorado evenings giving way to the light of the full moon.

Busy Like a Beaver

This past summer driving along Moose-Wilson Road in Grand Teton National Park looking for Elk we spotted some beaver building a dam.  They would chop down large branches and then whittle them down to smaller pieces to put in place for their dam.  They were for the most part pretty much hidden, but I found a little opening to catch a glimpse of one working away on a tree branch. Such cute little animals, just working away, oblivious to the world around them.
