Grizzly Bear 610

This is Grizzly Bear 610 with her two cubs that I captured from a couple of years ago at Willow Flats one evening. Grizzly Bear 610 was showing her two cubs how to hunt running and splitting up herds of elk that were in the flats that evening. I’m hoping to spot wildlife again as I head up to Grand Teton National Park this week.

Grizzly Bear 610 actually shed her cubs this year so they are out on their own. Grizzly Bear 399, which is Bear 610’s mother, has had 3 more cubs and is active in the park.  I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing some bears running around the park, at a distance of course.

Excellent shot Rick. Just curious, what is the numbering system for the bear that you are using?

    • RickLouiePhoto

The Grizzly Bears are tracked with and tagged with numbers by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These are the tag numbers associated with these bears. If you can rent a long lens for your trip this year. Jeff’s got good connections for seeing wildlife! I used a 70-200 with a 2X multiplier for this shot. Sure would have been nice to have another 2-400mm, but then again I’m not sure I would have wanted to travel with another case and a large tripod and gimbal head.

  • So great. Best to keep your distance.

      Thanks, Kris.

Great shot Rick, I would love to stumble upon something like this, lucky! and Pro!

  • Toad Hollow Photo

I’ve been so wanting to photograph a bear for quite some time. This is such a great shot, Rick, I love how you’ve included some context to the surroundings in this picture, it really adds a great layer.

Thanks Toad! Yea it came out nice. I sure wish I had gotten closer, but didn’t have the big boy’s 600mm lens at my disposal.

Thanks! No the pros were the ones with gimbal mounts and 600mm + mulipliers attached to their 1D’s and D4’s.
