Ice Castles

Brent Christensen is the creator of Ice Castles located in Silverthorne,Colorado. It’s an amazing structure made of icicles formed into arches, towers, walkways and tunnels. Brent invited me up to get a view of the Ice Castles and allowed me to take some pictures so I went up with fellow photographers Brian Sands and Ryan Wright to capture this place.

Ice Castles for Brent started all started from him creating an ice rink in his back yard for his kids as something to do in the winter months. He started playing with the icicles and eventually transformed these icicles to what his kids referred to as Ice Castles. There are towers in this complex as high as 30 ft. tall and 10,000 tons, illuminated with fluorescent lights that makes evening viewing a magical experience!

I thought today I’d share some of the images from the visit to give you a little flavor of the place. Some of these images I took some creative rights but gives you an idea of all the textures and contrast you will see when you visit Ice Castles.

If you are looking for something to do, head up to the high country and check out Ice Castles this weekend. If you are up in the high country in Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain or Vail, stop by on your way back to Denver for a truly unique experience, especially at night. There is no other structure like Ice Castles.

Here’s the Denver Post’s News article on Ice Castles.

  • These are sweet! Awesome post Rick! I love that last shot and that first shot. What did you use to get the lighting on the people or was that just from the castle?

    • I used a remote flash set to about 1/4 power to highlight them.

  • The colors you captured in there are friggin sweet. I totally want to come visit this just for the experience!
