Merrick Butte

Monument Valley has been the location for many western films and is the vision of what people think of the American Southwest. This image here is of Merrick Butte with the East Mitten Butte to the left of Merrick. The famous triangle of buttes is in this same location which include these two buttes along with a third West Mitten Butte and can be seen in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. The harsh sun wasn’t ideal for images, but I was able to use the wispy clouds and use the contrast for the shot of Merrick Butte. I didn’t get enough time to really explore the area this trip.  I plan on coming back with a more strategic plan next time and hopefully capture the area during the light at sunrise and sunset.

  • Gorgeous Rick. I love the southwest and this image evokes a time gone by.

  • I so love you comp on this. There is such a great feeling of monumental size on this!

  • Nice composition, Rick! I like the way the two foreground rocks act as leading lines by pointing at the Butte. Interesting cloud formation, too.

  • Love this RIck! Great composition and love the B&W!

  • Nicely done. Terrific use of black and white here.

  • What an epic shot here, Rick, both the shadows and the sky really work together well to create something that is very dramatic.

  • Thanks so much everyone!
