I’ve been building up an expedition vehicle to take myself and tour guests up into the back country. I started with a 2006 Toyota 4Runner and added some suspension components, larger wheels, all-terrain tires and skid plates underneath. This weekend I joined up with Chris Nitz, The Photo Frontier to take the 4Runner out on its maiden voyage into the Umcompahgre Wilderness down in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It’s probably my favorite area of the state.
I took this opportunity to visit some places I’ve never visited before and to see if some of these locations might be viable for upcoming tours. These trails took us to some of the most amazing views Colorado has to offer. The vehicle was packed tight with not only photo gear, but with tents, luggage and some recovery gear just in case we ran into some trouble. Luckily for us we didn’t run into any trouble and the 4Runner handles some fairly rough terrain with ease. The 4Runner got a little dirty so we decided to give it a little bath while out on the trail in Governor Basin.
This weekend was about exploration, making good friendships even better and creating memorable experiences all while experience Colorful Colorado! We exceeded limits we never thought we could and also experience others pushing themselves to the limit of the human spirit (The running of the Hard Rock 100 was happening while we were out exploring the trails).
I’ll have more on the 4Runner build in a future post for those who are interested. Have a great week!
