Colorado Fall Color Tour 2016

The Colorado Fall Color Tour for 2016 is now open for registration. Tour space is very limited and will be split up into two tours – Aspen and Crested Butte, Colorado. This is a discovery year for me so cost is low if you want to do some discovery work with me this year.

Hope you can join Chris and I this year!

Colorado Fall Color Tour

Colorado Fall Color Tour

The Colorado Fall Color Tour for 2015 is now set and ready for you to participate! Early interest is at an all time high so there are only a few spots left in the tour. This year I’m combining forces with The Photo Frontier and Armando Martinez will be helping me lead the tour. He’s a master Lightroom and Photoshop expert and is waiting to give out his tips and tricks during the tour.

This year again I’m limiting the number of tour participants so you can get personal instruction and help when needed. The tour will begin in Aspen this year and head south again to our main base in Telluride, Colorado, one of the top Adventure Cities in the world. You’ll have 3 and 1/2 days of out in the field shooting.
Head over to the Tour page for more information and to reserve your spot in this year’s tour.

Look forward to seeing you this fall here in Colorado!

A Glimpse of Capitol Peak

In this year’s fall tour we headed toward the Maroon Bells Snowmass wilderness area from Telluride. Rain   and we had been in rainy weather the whole day. In the afternoon we ventured down Capitol Creek road. The rain had let up and the sun was peaking through periodically through the fog and clouds. The clouds teased us in hopes of seeing Capitol Peak, but just gave us glimpses of the mountain above.

The hills below Capitol Peak were filled with color. The saturated golden-yellow, greens and browns were a stark contrast to the rising granite of Capitol Peak so I put on my telephoto to capture this scene just as the fun pierced through the clouds highlighting the gray granite mountain.

Red Mountain Pass

The most amazing scene a few weeks ago on my Colorado Fall Color Tour was coming out of Ophir Pass and heading north on the Million Dollar Highway (550) toward Ouray, Colorado was seeing Red Mountain Pass.  I have never seen so many fall colors in Colorado in one location.  It was truly an amazing sight intermixed with the iron-ore colored mountain pass.  Almost every turn was filled with amazing scenes that we didn’t know where to turn.  Here’s one shot above the mining area and highlighting the amazing color this year on the Ouray side of the pass. It was definitely one of highlights of the tour this year.

Fall into Winter

This year in Telluride we were greeted with the one of the first snows of the season. Many of the aspens were still showing green and at the early stages of fall colors, but as winter started to settle in the trees they only have a short time before full winter sets in and the color drops the the ground. I captured this branch of aspen leaves with yellow, some red and still some green and as the snow started to spurt faintly captured it falling among the fall colors. Just something soothing and calming about this image in the contrast between vibrant colors and the slow falling snow. I think I could have watch this scene for hours. I call it Fall into Winter.

The cold weather is settling here in Colorado and the nights are getting chilly. It won’t be long before we lose the last of the fall colors here and winter sets in. Enjoy what’s left this of the fall colors as you can. Have a great weekend!

Bridal Veil Falls

What do you do when it’s starts to snow in Telluride and your on your Fall Photo Tour? Well you get in your 4WD off-road vehicle and head up to the box canyon behind Telluride and drive up the dirt road to the top of Bridal Veil Falls. Bridal Veil Falls is a 365 Foot waterfall overlooking the town of Telluride. The power plant sits at the top of the falls.  In the winter it becomes frozen and is a huge challenge for ice climbers.

The color on the side of the box canyon was tremendous and so we headed up the off-road trail to the top. It’s a tremendous view, but totally worth the trip. Snow mixed with the fall colors made for some excellent opportunities to capture some unique scenes!  This image is of Bridal Veil falls and the box canyon with a touch of snow and the gorgeous fall colors dotting the side of the canyon.

Walls of Gold – Fall Colors in Colorado

I’m excited to be heading back down to the West Elk Mountains and the Uncompahgre National Forest to see the fall colors in Colorado. I’m also excited to have Chris Nitz and Lee A. Brown join me as we tour for the fall colors in Colorado. There will be plenty of sunrise and sunset shoots and possibly a late night astrophotography session among the gold colored aspens. I hope that more of you can join me next year!

There has been reports of snow on the mountain peaks and though fall colors are starting late here in Colorado due to the moisture we have had, I’m sure there will be plenty of gold to be seen. It’s definitely one of my favorite times of the year and Colorado really shines this time of year in the southwest part of the state.

This image was from last year along Owl Creek Pass.  Walls of gold lined the roads made for spectacular imagery and you certainly didn’t mind taking the slow drive through the mountains.

Have a great week everyone!  I’ll be back with hopefully some more wonderful fall images.

Ohio Pass Illuminated

One of my favorite things to do is to take long exposures. It’s especially fun to do some light painting at night and to also capture the stars. This image was taken at Ohio Pass this fall. Ryan Wright and I were capturing the stars in the sky above the aspens and then had our friend Casey drive his Ford Escape down the pass toward illuminating the Aspens giving the trees some more color and life.  Here is Ohio Pass Illuminated.

If you would like to see this area next fall and learn more about astrophotography and light painting, be sure to sign up for our Fall Photo Tour at Colorado Photo Tours website. The banner link to the right will take you to the site >>>>.

I also want to thank you my followers for encouraging me and staying with me this past year.  Have a great Thanksgiving Holiday weekend!  Enjoy your friends and family and we can’t wait to see you back here after the holiday.

Sunrise at Ohio Pass

I decided to issue a late Friday post for the weekend and Monday and share another fall image.  I hope that you have been enjoying them.  I certainly enjoyed getting out and viewing the fall foliage.  I’m heading up to Estes Park this weekend for Elk Fest.  Hopefully I’ll see some elk, but mostly to spend some time with my wife and some good friends.  Who knows I may capture some more fall foliage while I’m up near Rocky Mountain National Park.

This is sunrise at Ohio Pass with the Anthracite Range and Castles in the distance.  Have a great weekend!

Last Dollar Road

I met up with fellow Colorado Photographer Ryan Wright and Casey Shipley this weekend down in the Gunnison/Crested Butte area to capture the fall colors in southern Colorado.  We had a great day of shooting around Kebler Pass and Ohio Pass.  On the final day I split from them and ventured further southwest toward Ridgway/Ouray/Telluride area for a final day of shooting before heading home.  I did not get much sleep this weekend but did take in some of the most beautiful scenery Colorado has to offer.

This area contains Wilson Peak, which is on the label for Coors Beer and the many of the scenes from the western movie True Grit, starring John Wayne. The San Juan Mountains are sun-drenched in colorful aspens and it’s just one beautiful scene after another.  Every few 1/8th mile in the car seemed like another photo opportunity.

My final adventure took me along Last Dollar Road.  It’s a hidden gem of a jeep trail that takes you from Ridgway to Telluride. Luckily we have had fairly dry weather and the road is passable by passenger car (barely), but rain will make this a trail a 4-wheeled venture only. Looking down in the valley on the final descent gave me this beautiful scene filled with a full color spectrum of aspens. This is truly Colorful Colorado.
