Lizard Lake – Marble, Colorado Fall Photography

Last week’s tour took us up to Crystal Mill to capture the iconic Colorado mill during the fall season. It was a jarring ride and not sure I really want to do it again. There isn’t much scenery along the way and can be hit or miss with fall colors at the mill so you are taking a chance. They do have the property fenced off now so the only way to capture the scene now is from up above the river.

Along the way down however we came up to Lizard Lake and the conditions were perfect. The light was low on the horizon and the water was still giving us a great mirror of the scene with the fall colors. You just never know what you will encounter, but after a long bumpy ride up to the mill this was a welcome scene!

Diamonds in the Rough | Colorado Fall Colors

The Colorado Fall Color Tour starts in 10 days!  Colors are already starting to turn here in Colorado and I’m really getting excited for this year’s tour.

This year we have Armando Martinez out starting off the tour with a wonderful Lightroom/Photoshop training session and we’ll end the tour with a Full Moon!  It will be one of the biggest moon’s of the year!

Here’s a glimpse of things to come.  One of the images from the Capitol Peak area near Aspen.

Fire in the Sky

Last Friday was our Sunflower Jamboree with my friends at The Photo Frontier. Smoke from Wyoming and the west coast entered the state that day due to the forest fires and created a haze in the sky.  It didn’t make for great pictures while the sun was out but then at sunset all the colors from the ash came alive in sky along the horizon!  It was one amazing sunset!

Burst of Sunshine

One of my favorite focal lengths lately has been at 35mm.  It’s close enough to give subject matters a normal look without distortion yet allow for environmental elements to be shown in the scene.

This image was taken during sunset and clouds started to get darker and cover the horizon, but just above the horizon there was a break in the clouds and the sun came piercing through and created an amazing orange glow on the horizon. I wanted to capture the sunflowers a little closer so I decided to use the 35mm focal length and stopped down the f-stop to f/11 to give the sun a little starburst.  I cropped this in a panoramic format eliminating some distracting light in the sky.

This is always a fun time of year. I really enjoy the sunflower season. Tomorrow is a full moon.  I hope that you can join The Photo Frontier and I for our Sunflower Jamboree.

They’re Back!

It’s that time of year again!  It’s harvest season and the sunflowers on the Eastern Plains outside of Denver are starting to bloom again with those magical large sunflowers!  Fields as far as the eye can see all the way to the horizon!  It’s definitely time to do some driving on the plains to find large glorious farm fields of Sunflowers!

Colorado Fall Color Tour 2015

Colorado Fall Color Tour

Colorado Fall Color Tour

The Colorado Fall Color Tour for 2015 is now set and ready for you to participate! Early interest is at an all time high so there are only a few spots left in the tour. This year I’m combining forces with The Photo Frontier and Armando Martinez will be helping me lead the tour. He’s a master Lightroom and Photoshop expert and is waiting to give out his tips and tricks during the tour.

This year again I’m limiting the number of tour participants so you can get personal instruction and help when needed. The tour will begin in Aspen this year and head south again to our main base in Telluride, Colorado, one of the top Adventure Cities in the world. You’ll have 3 and 1/2 days of out in the field shooting.
Head over to the Tour page for more information and to reserve your spot in this year’s tour.

Look forward to seeing you this fall here in Colorado!

Highland Bridge

I’m doing a little Throwback Thursday today.  I was hunting for some Colorado images from my library of images for a book that’s being published and came across this image of the Highland Bridge.  I decided to reprocess it again as my tools and skills have gotten better and thought it would be fun to re-work one of my first digital images.  This is the Highland Bridge in Denver and an image I call “Stairway to Heaven”.  This was a long exposure taken with a Canon T1i and a 10-22mm zoom lens.  Just goes to show you don’t need a full frame camera and a fancy L lens.  Have a great weekend!

Ashcroft Mountain

One of the most scenic roads just outside of the Maroon Bells/Maroon Lake Recreation area is down along Castle Creek Road.  Castle Creek Road takes you down along a scenic drive to the ghost town of Ashcroft and to a beautiful view of Ashcroft Mountain. After sunrise at Maroon Lake, we headed down to Ashcroft. The clouds and fog were still settled over the valley, but it didn’t take away from the beautiful view of Ashcroft Mountain along with the fall colors of the aspens.  Here’s a wonderful fall view of Ashcroft Mountain.
