Snowy Barn

Just outside the town of Crested Butte there is quite a bit of farmland. On this particular morning after a winter storm the fresh coat of untouched powder covered the barn and the fields surrounding it. The bluejay blue skies are normally seem uneventful, but were a perfect backdrop along with Mt. Crested Butte for this Snowy Barn Scene.

Waves of Frost

I think I might call this Crested Butte Week! I found so many images I hadn’t processed from my trip down to Gunnison/Crested Butte and now I’m springing them all on your this week. Here’s another fantastic scene of frosted over pine trees. To me it just looked like a wave of frost flowing up and down the mountain side. It was an amazing scene. Frosty Creek

You wouldn’t think that venturing out in sub-freezing weather would be much fun, but right before New Years, Ryan Wright and I ventured down to the Gunnison/Crested Butte area to add some much needed winter scenes to our portfolios. We hit the area just at the right time and a beautiful blanket of fresh powdery snow covered the area and made for wonderful holiday scenes!

Venturing up the Highway 12 along Coal Creek toward Kebler Pass the hills were filled with frosty snow covered branches.  Looking down from the road there was this amazing scene with a snow covered creek, some tracks where an rabbit had made fresh tracks and a forest of frosty pine trees. The quiet of the early morning was broken up by only the water from the creek moving below the snow.

Holiday Swing

Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful 2015 and are ready to kick off 2016. I definitely ended it with a bang and a great quick trip to Gunnison and Crested Butte! It’s the kick I needed to get back in the “swing” of things for 2016.

Ryan Wright showed me a picture on Instagram of some clear frozen ice located in the Blue Mesa Reservoir and that was our initial goal was to capture this wonderful clear ice, but when we arrived in Gunnison it had started to snow and the next morning the Blue Mesa Reservoir was covered in 4-6 inches of snow so the ice was not to be seen. We did however capture the beauty a fresh snow in Gunnison and Crested Butte. We embraced the single digit weather (1 degree on Wednesday evening) and captured some very holiday festive scenery around Crested Butte and Gunnison.

This image is of a festive lighted tire swing on a farm near the turnoff to Jack’s Cabin.  The lights of the swing lit up the tree and and accented the frost from the light snow that was falling that evening. One of the unique and wonderful scenes near Crested Butte.

I had forgotten how beautiful Crested Butte was and may have to incorporate it as part of my fall tour this year. It’s just a wonderful mountain town with great scenery surrounding the area.

Have a wonderful 2016!

12 Best Landscapes 2013 – Part 5

We finish out the 12 Best Landscapes 2013 in Colorado. Image #8 is something panorama of the Milky Way along Ohio Pass near Crested Butte, Colorado. This image was taken on a clear evening this past year during my fall photo tour.  One of the benefits of not having any clouds in the sky makes for an amazing sky at night especially when the moon is small in the sky.

West Dallas Creek is home to one of the most amazing fall scenes and is image #9 of my 12 Best Landscapes for 2013. This is Mount Sneffels and is a prominent 14 thousand ft. peak near Telluride and Ridgway, Colorado. The Sneffels Meadow here in this image contains some of the most amazing fall colors in Colorado and is a definite must see for photographers. It will definitely be one of the places we visit next year during my Colorado Fall Colors Photography Tour.

West Elk Wilderness Sunrise

Ohio Pass is not only a great place for astrophotography, it’s also an amazing place to view a sunrise, especially in the fall.  The West Elk Wilderness in the valley below the pass is one large sea of aspens with views of the West Elk Mountains and the Castles to the west. It’s an amazing sight.

Chris Nitz, Lee Brown and myself spent the evening before up late doing some astro-photography here on Ohio Pass and decided that sleep would be sacrificed and so we got up early and came back out to Ohio Pass to catch the sunrise. There is just something special about this view of the West Elk Wilderness. I captured this image just as the first light of the day touched the tip of The Castles, top of the snow-covered peaks and the tips of a row of aspens just below. I love the contrast that this scene created.

Stars over Ohio Pass

The first day Lee A. Brown, Chris Nitz and I got into the Crested Butte Area on my Fall Tour it was a crystal clear day. The sunset was uneventful since there were no clouds in the sky, but I knew that evening it would be perfect conditions for some astrophotography. We dressed warm and headed for Ohio Pass. The sky did not disappoint us. Be sure to check out Chris’s first astro shot on his blog.  Well done, Chris!

We experimented with some different compositions, did some light painting on the trees and just before we left I borrowed Lee’s Zeiss 21mm lens to do a few compositions. The Zeiss is one sharp lens.  I should have borrowed it more on the trip. This is a lens that is definitely going on my wish list. I created this 9 shot panorama of the Milky Way. It’s my first panorama of the Milky Way and I still have some things to learn and experiment to get it just right, but I have to say this is a good first start.

I enjoy experimenting and trying new things. The process of learning and discovering is what keeps the brain active and is what I love about photography. There seems to be something new to learn and do and is what keeps me excited to be a photographer.  I love sharing what I know and if you ever come out to Colorado I hope that I can share some of my knowledge with you.

I’m definitely looking forward to next years Fall Tour. I know that Chris is coming out again. Hopefully you can join me next year.  Have a great weekend!

Lost Lake

This is Lost Lake near Kebler Pass in the Crested Butte, Colorado area. It’s always stocked with fish and is a great place for families to camp. Kids and parents alike will enjoy fishing and hiking. If your interested in seeing this area of the country don’t forget to check out my photo tour website, Colorado Photo Tours. Hope to see you out here in Colorful Colorado next year.

Kebler Pass

Having been in New York City all last week, I jetted back to Colorado on Saturday and then quickly unpacked and packed and headed for Crested Butte, Colorado and met up with Ryan Wright and Casey Shipley. It was about a 4 and 1/2 hour drive down from Denver and was hoping to make it to Kebler Pass for sunset.  I arrived to the overlook just as the sun was setting illuminating the trees.  It was a little hazy so we didn’t get the alpen glow I was hoping for, but the fall colors of the aspens were spectacular. Kebler Pass is so full of color and one of the reasons I love the Colorado Southwest Mountains this time of year.

Kebler Pass is has the largest aspen stand in the world. All the trees you see in this are one big living organism and all inter-connected. I captured this panorama of Kebler Pass. This small image in this blog post doesn’t do it justice. Click on the image for the Lightbox view.
