Full Moon Rising

The Photo Frontier and I had a great turnout for the Full Moon Jamboree. The Supermoon greeted us with a beautiful moon directly over the skyline of Denver. Here’s a couple images of the Denver skyline as the moon was rising over the city.

This first image I used a long telephoto to compress the image just as the moon come up behind one of the cranes in the city and in the 2nd is a little wider view of the city skyline as the moon was rising over.

Fire in the Sky

Last Friday was our Sunflower Jamboree with my friends at The Photo Frontier. Smoke from Wyoming and the west coast entered the state that day due to the forest fires and created a haze in the sky.  It didn’t make for great pictures while the sun was out but then at sunset all the colors from the ash came alive in sky along the horizon!  It was one amazing sunset!

Arrowhead Golf Club | Denver

I’ve never had a chance to capture the Lion formations from the north side Roxborough State Park at Arrowhead Golf Club, but this past summer I had the opportunity to capture a wedding through my portrait business, Rick Louie Studios and took an opportunity to capture the beautiful red rock formations. It’s an amazing view down the valley and give the Arrowhead its signature views.

I took some artistic license for this image and applied a pastel preset to it that I normally only use for portraits. It gives the image sort of a dreamy look to it.

Burst of Sunshine

One of my favorite focal lengths lately has been at 35mm.  It’s close enough to give subject matters a normal look without distortion yet allow for environmental elements to be shown in the scene.

This image was taken during sunset and clouds started to get darker and cover the horizon, but just above the horizon there was a break in the clouds and the sun came piercing through and created an amazing orange glow on the horizon. I wanted to capture the sunflowers a little closer so I decided to use the 35mm focal length and stopped down the f-stop to f/11 to give the sun a little starburst.  I cropped this in a panoramic format eliminating some distracting light in the sky.

This is always a fun time of year. I really enjoy the sunflower season. Tomorrow is a full moon.  I hope that you can join The Photo Frontier and I for our Sunflower Jamboree.

They’re Back!

It’s that time of year again!  It’s harvest season and the sunflowers on the Eastern Plains outside of Denver are starting to bloom again with those magical large sunflowers!  Fields as far as the eye can see all the way to the horizon!  It’s definitely time to do some driving on the plains to find large glorious farm fields of Sunflowers!

Highland Bridge

I’m doing a little Throwback Thursday today.  I was hunting for some Colorado images from my library of images for a book that’s being published and came across this image of the Highland Bridge.  I decided to reprocess it again as my tools and skills have gotten better and thought it would be fun to re-work one of my first digital images.  This is the Highland Bridge in Denver and an image I call “Stairway to Heaven”.  This was a long exposure taken with a Canon T1i and a 10-22mm zoom lens.  Just goes to show you don’t need a full frame camera and a fancy L lens.  Have a great weekend!

A Ray of Hope

The sunflower fields are starting blooming here in the Denver area. Thanks to John DeBord for the tip on the location of this field.  It is a huge field spanning hundreds of acres!  It’s going to be a great crop of sunflowers this year.  I’ve noticed there are quite a few fields that are in the early stages and will be in full bloom over the next couple of weeks.

I captured this image a few nights ago right at sunset just as the “God Beams peaked below the clouds.  It was like a ray of hope to the sunflowers as they stretched out for the last beams of sunshine. It was another beautiful sunset here in Colorado!

LoDo Glow | Lower Downtown Denver

I thought I would share another image from Lower Downtown Denver (LoDo).  This one really caught my eye with the red glow of the DaVita Building and also I was able to capture some light trails from the light rail trains moving past. This image was captured during blue hour and gave a nice contrast to the orange glow of the trains. Union Station and the red of the DaVita skyrise.

I have a little project working and hope to capture more of Denver over the next year so this was a nice start.  I’ll post an image I took a few years ago coming up so you can see a before and after of this area.  It is interesting to see the growth of buildings that has occurred. Hopefully I’ll be able to capture it again when the building is finished in LoDo.  Hopefully I have this wonderful private capture point in a couple of years to continue this perspective of Lower Downtown Denver.

LoDo Denver, Colorado

It’s been a while since I capture LoDo Denver (lower downtown Denver), but thanks to a friend I was able to capture if from a special vantage point again. RTD has put in a new structure around Union Station and so i wanted to capture the skyline view with the new structure in place.  Here’s the new LoDo Denver!
