My 70-200mm lens (and in this image used with a 2x Extender) has become one of my favorite lenses. It so versatile from capturing sports and action as well as being used for portraits. I love the fall off of the lens and the why it compresses images to isolate the subject. Here it is the Lone Bison from one of my favorite places, an open field near Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park.

I went to shoot the Rocky Mountain Region Porsche Club Racing event this weekend out at High Plains Raceway. The event gives me an excuse to get up early and head out to the Eastern Plains of Colorado to look for some “Americana” and hopefully find a nice sunrise as well.

The sky this past Saturday was cloudless so it didn’t really make for a great sunrise, but I was on a mission to find Americana. Driving past Last Chance, Colorado I spotted this old abandoned house in the distance out on the prairie. Weathered wood gives off a nice patina glow when the sun hits it in the morning. I remember that from shooting the Thomas Moulton Barn in the Grand Tetons. As the sun rose off the horizon, the glow of the house turned more golden and made for a nice contrast against the open plains. I found my piece of Americana! I think I need to spend some more time out in this area and venture out into the abandoned houses. I’m sure the scenes inside the houses will tell an even better story.

It just felt like a good day to share an image of the warmth of a summer morning in the Grand Tetons. Here’s a little different take on the Grand Teton Mountain. I used Grand Teton in this picture as more of a background element and made the sagebrush the main subject. If you have ever hiked around the open fields, there is plenty of sage. My skin experienced quite a bit of it this past year as I walked through the fields in my shorts. When you get right down to look at the brush, it’s quite beautiful with the silvery green color. So here’s a closeup look at the sagebrush plant in Grand Teton National Park. Stay warm, everyone!

The drive on the River Road was a perfect finale to a wonderful road trip to Utah. I’m going to complete this series with two images, the first of which I call From Heaven Above and the 2nd is an image of the open Road to Cisco, Utah. I’m just a sucker for a good open road image! This final section of the road is more open plains and badlands, but still displaying its quiet beauty.

I couldn’t ask for better scenery and some amazing skies during this 4+ hour trip through eastern Utah. It was pretty much empty road from the Castle Valley on the way to Cisco, Utah. It was just me, the open road and my camera, capturing the next scene that presented itself. My friend Jeff Clow says “if you want to take better pictures, stand in front of better things.” I think I stood in front of a bunch of better things this trip.

Tomorrow, to end the week and the year, 2011, I’m going to present my year-end summary. I hope you enjoyed the year as much as I enjoyed capturing images this past year.

My trip to Green River, Utah felt like an old western movie the whole time I was there. The southwestern scenes just felt like they came from an old black and white western movie and I felt like John Wayne was going to show up on horseback any minute. The tall mountain buttes, the open range and a cloudy sunset just felt like it should be in black and white so today’s image is just that, a black and white…monochrome.
