Hardrock 100

Each year in the San Juan Mountains ultra-marathoners run through the night for 100.5 miles with a total elevation change of 67,984 ft. – average elevation of 11,000 ft for the Hardrock 100! I captured this lone runner just as the sun was coming over the horizon plodding along over to the next mountain pass. Cheers to these amazing athletes!

County Road 9

One of the most beautiful roads in the Uncompahgre Wilderness during the fall is the West Dallas Creek Road, or County Road 9. There is an amazing view of Sneffels Mountain Range towering over the West Fork of the Dallas Creek, colorful scrub oak and the surrounding valley full of large groves of aspens. It’s one of the highlights of my Fall Tour and I look forward to seeing this area every year.

Standing Tall

I’m getting so excited for fall colors!  It’s just around the corner!  Only 17 more days for the Colorado Fall Colors Tour.

I’ve actually had one opening free up on the tour if anyone is interested. Just contact me for more details. We are starting in Aspen this year with a Photoshop Lightroom class and finishing up with 3 days in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride.

I think this is my favorite time of the year with the crisp mornings and warm afternoons and shimmering gold leaves of the aspen trees against the beautiful mountain backdrops of the Rocky Mountains. This image was taken along McClure Pass in the Aspen Snowmass Wilderness. The tops of these aspen trees towered above the hillside along Captiol Peak mixed in among the deep green pine trees. I used my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L IIs to compress the images isolating the group of golden aspens standing tall on the hillside.

La Junta Peak

Above Bridal Veil Falls in Telluride is a trail leading further up into the high country to Blue Lakes of the San Juan Mountains.  It’s an old mining road and along the way there are still remnants of mines from the past.

This image is of an old abandoned mining shack with La Junta Peak and the mountain ridges off in the distance. The area around Telluride is filled with old mining ruins reminding of the past history in the area.

Sunrise at Governor Basin

Governor Basin was amazing a couple of weeks ago. The trail to Governor Basin was a bit muddy, but the drive paid off with lush greens colors and amazing wildflowers which offset the deep rich colors of the ore and soil within the basin and the Saint Sophia Ridge. This is sunrise at Governor Basin near Ouray, Colorado in the Umcompahgre National Forest.

The funny (and not so funny) thing is when I went to grab my camera and tripod out of the back of the 4Runner, I realized that my tripod didn’t make it on the trip. I accidentally left it at home.  Luckily I had my Gorillapod with me and improvised to capture a sunrise shot.  The nice thing about the Gorillapod is that it was low to the ground and was able to pull in some of the low lying wildflowers for the image.

Colorado Fall Color Tour 2015

Colorado Fall Color Tour

Colorado Fall Color Tour

The Colorado Fall Color Tour for 2015 is now set and ready for you to participate! Early interest is at an all time high so there are only a few spots left in the tour. This year I’m combining forces with The Photo Frontier and Armando Martinez will be helping me lead the tour. He’s a master Lightroom and Photoshop expert and is waiting to give out his tips and tricks during the tour.

This year again I’m limiting the number of tour participants so you can get personal instruction and help when needed. The tour will begin in Aspen this year and head south again to our main base in Telluride, Colorado, one of the top Adventure Cities in the world. You’ll have 3 and 1/2 days of out in the field shooting.
Head over to the Tour page for more information and to reserve your spot in this year’s tour.

Look forward to seeing you this fall here in Colorado!

Colorful Graze – Wilson Mesa

I was looking for a peaceful image and came across this image from my fall tour. Just as we were positioning to capture the sunset at Wilson Mesa near Telluride, Colorado a horse came out to pasture for its evening graze.  Just a nice peaceful image set against the fall colors.

Have a great weekend!

Last Dollar Road Sunrise

The light is always dramatic at the top of Last Dollar Road and I can always count on coming away with a great image at Sunrise or Sunset. The light comes in from the left or the right of the scene depending on the time of day and creates some dramatic and amazing contrasts and textures, especially during the fall season with gold aspens spread across the mountain side below Mt. Wilson.

This was the final sunrise in Telluride for my fall tour this year and Last Dollar Road did not disappoint. I just love the brilliant gold color brought in just as the sun rose above the horizon contrasted by the iron ore red alpenglow along the Mt. Wilson range. The light was amazing and seemed like every few minutes the scene would change to create another great image.

I can’t wait to take my next set of tour guests to this wonderful place.

A Road Less Traveled

I had ventured down this dirt road behind the Double RL Ranch just out of Ridgway, Colorado many times. This year during the Colorado Fall Tour it didn’t look too promising.  The aspens were still very green and it didn’t look like the colors were there on the trees and the normal clearing with the view of Mt. Sneffels just didn’t do much for capturing a fall scene. With the help of Chris Nitz behind the wheel this year, we decided to head back behind the Ralph Lauren’s Double RL Ranch into some open forest land. We ventured down a road less traveled.

The road was very muddy and this year with the large Suburban it was sliding along and having to pass other vehicles on a road really only meant for a single Jeep. We pressed on and came up on some cows grazing in a stream and ventured down into the shallow creek not knowing what was in store for us just beyond a set of trees. Coming up out of the creek and through the trees it was like the heavens opened up and gave us the most amazing scene with a view of Mt. Sneffels and a glow on aspen trees that left us with our mouth open in amazement. The aspens were green all the way up and through this clearing the colors just burst upon us catching us all by surprise!  There was so much to capture. I’m sure we spent 2-3 hours venturing from one spot to the next, even trying to sneak up on some cows that would not have anything to do with being caught on film.

Here’s a panorama of the wonderful opening with Mt. Sneffels in the background. It seems every year there is one place we visit on the tour that just takes your breath away. I can’t want to find that new spot next year.
