Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

Here in Denver we have been enjoying the warm spring weather. This past weekend we reached the mid 80’s and was getting used to the warm weather. Yesterday Mother Nature had another plan and provided us with a blanket of snow that will stay with us for a couple of days. I’m glad I fertilized the yard last night before the storm hit.

I’m still ready for the warm summer weather and so it had me looking back over my photo library from this past summer and I discovered this image. I can’t believe I never processed it, but sometimes it take a second look at an image to realize you have something worth sharing.

This image reminded me of one of the verses in a classic children’s prayer:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Lord, be with me through the night
And keep me ’til the morning light.

Pam and Dusty – Together Forever

I had a great photo session with Pam and Dusty this weekend!  They certainly have found a partner in each other that will last them the rest of their lives.  Instead of the normal photos I though I would share with you one of my favorite new portrait sales tools, Animoto videos.  It’s a great service, fully customizable to create your own personal videos and all the music and themes can be used for commercial use (Pro or Reseller Accounts).

Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep

It’s a busy week for me so I thought I would bring out the Big Ram today so I can power through my Wednesday.  It’s also the mascot for my Almer Mater, Colorado State University!  Go Rams! This was one of the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep Rams I captured this past fall just outside of Green River, Utah.  Have a great Wednesday!

Busy Like a Beaver

This past summer driving along Moose-Wilson Road in Grand Teton National Park looking for Elk we spotted some beaver building a dam.  They would chop down large branches and then whittle them down to smaller pieces to put in place for their dam.  They were for the most part pretty much hidden, but I found a little opening to catch a glimpse of one working away on a tree branch. Such cute little animals, just working away, oblivious to the world around them.

Shane's Milky Way

This past summer I was out with Jeff Clow’s Dirt Cheap Photo Tour group doing some teaching on long exposures and light painting in the Grand Tetons.  Jeff decided to take us out to the abandoned cabin from the set of Shane out in Antelope Flats and get us away from the city lights. I captured this image looking away from the cabin.  Nothing like a star filled sky away from the city.

Teton Morning Mist

One of the best places to catch a sunrise in Grand Teton National Park is at Oxbow Bend. Most mornings the water on the Snake River is still and you can use it to give a reflection of Mt. Moran in the distance. The morning light gives a nice orange/reddish Alpen glow to the top of Mt. Moran. On this morning this past fall I was at Oxbow Bend with a number of other photographers. I snuck down along the bank and waited for the sun to rise. I captured a few shots of the Alpen Glow on Mt. Moran, but wasn’t excited with the scene on the bend of the Snake River.

Across the bank on the Snake River from where I was standing there was some incredible colors as fall was approaching the area. The morning mist was hovering over the river giving some nice texture over the reflection and contrast to the fall colors. Such a beautiful morning. I’ve been to this area about 4 times this past year and each time it offers an incredible scene each just as memorable as the others.

Moraine Lake Waterfall

It’s Wednesday and it just feels like we need something to relax and carry us through the rest of the week so today I’m bringing you a Waterfall Wednesday!  There is something relaxing about a small hillside waterfall.  This waterfall area was on the way to Moraine Lake in Banff, Alberta, Canada.  If you take the Moraine Lake Road there is a large waterfall at the first hairpin turn that is fairly visible from the road, but further up you have to look for a small opening, you will see an inset bank of waterfalls.  When you hike in through the opening it seems like another world, away from the traffic and the outside elements.  You are just surrounded by lush green forest, moss and an incredible bank of continuous little waterfalls all the way up the hillside into the forest.

Have a great Wednesday!  Relax, it’s downhill from here!

Pikes Peak

I thought today I’d present to you Pikes Peak.  I grew up in Colorado Springs and this 14,000 ft. mountain peak stood tall over the city.  Almost everyday you could see the mountain peak from where ever you were in the city.  Most of the images that you see of the Pikes Peak are from the city or with the Garden of the Gods in front of the peak, but today I thought I would give you a view from across the open plains to the northeast.  I guess I envision is a similar vision to what the early settlers would have seen across the open plains.  The early spanish settlers called this mountain “El Capitan” before it was renamed by Zebulon Pike.

Pikes Peak is the easternmost fourteen thousand foot peak in the United States.  It stands 14,110 ft. above sea level and 8000 ft. above the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado.  It’s one of Colorado’s 54 Fourteeners (mountains above 14,000 ft.). I was hoping the clouds would clear away showing the top of the peak on the morning I took this shot, but never did materialize.  I thought though that this image was still unique as the Alpen glow filling the clouds around the mountain giving the sky a dramatic look around the peak.  The smaller mountain to the left of Pikes Peak is Cheyenne Mountain.  Cheyenne Mountain is famous for NORAD (North American Aerospace Command) which continues to operate within the mountain.

BaoHaus

I thought I would make today another Food Friday! I’m foodie and love try new things when I’m traveling, especially to New York City. New York City is known for having some amazing food. Some of the best food is on food trucks, street vendors or “hole in the wall” places.

I heard about a place called BaoHaus.  It was started by Eddie and Evan Huang that makes homestyle Taiwanese-Chinese food just like they used to eat at home. The food is fresh, home-made food like “Mom” used to make. The BaoHaus in New York City is near 14th St. and 2nd Ave over by Union Square.

It’s a very small place with just a few tables. I decided to get my food to go and just buy an assortment of their food and bring it back to the hotel for some food photography. It never hurts to add to my stock photography portfolio. The BaoHaus did not disappoint. The food is excellent! I highly recommend this place if you are ever in New York. It’s cheap and good eats! Anyway here are a some pics of BaoHaus‘ wonderful food.

By the way, bring your hotel bell man leftovers. They will become your best friends!

Have a great weekend!

Capture Notes:

  • Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II
  • Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
  • Make Shift Studio – I didn’t have a flash so I used two hotel lamps, white plates from the hotel room – shot at ISO 800 – anywhere from f2.8-f4.5
  • Post Processing: I used Nik Software Color Efex Pro 4 and applied the Remove Color Cast to remove some of the yellow color cast from the images and the Detail Extractor, then ran it through Nik Software Viveza 2 to bring out color and detail in specific areas, such as the cilantro and the red pepper flakes, using the control points.

Flatiron Building

This is the Flatiron Building in New York City.  It was one of the first sky scrapers in New York City and iconic due to the triangular shape of the building.  It’s a steel-framed building clad with white terra-cotta.   It looks like the hull of a ship plowing through the water and at the apex of the building is only six ft. wide.  It was uniquely fit into a plot of land at the intersection of Broadway and 5th Avenue.

There is a great view of the Flatiron Building from the Madison Square Park.  If you visit Madison Square Park, there is a fantastic burger place, called the Shake Shack.  They have an awesome “Orange Creamsicle” shake called the Vitamin Shake and if you are vegetarian, the ‘Shroom Burger is awesome!

Photographer’s, this is my first HDR!  I can’t believe it.  I used Nik Software’s HDR Efex Pro to process this image and then ran it through with Color Efex Pro 4 and then Viveza 2 to bring out details and highlight certain areas. Overall I’m very happy with the results allowing me to bring out the details of the building.
