Wyoming Horses

In Grand Teton National Park there is the Triangle-X Dude Ranch and one of the many things they offer is horseback riding.  Guests are able to ride the millions of acres of land around Grand Teton National Park, Bridger Teton National Forest and Bridger Teton National Wilderness areas.  The grazing pasture is across the road from the ranch and on certain mornings they will herd the horses and run them across the road to the Ranch for guests to be able to ride the horses that day.

This particular morning I captured these Wyoming horses trotting from the pasture to the ranch across the road and it made for a perfect Wyoming scene with the Grand Teton Mountain Range in the background. The warm morning light made the horses glow and highlighted the sage brush surrounding them.

I’m definitely looking forward to getting back to the Grand Tetons again.  The mountains and surrounding scenery are just amazing! It’s a place you must see once in your lifetime.

Desert Southwest – Utah

It’s been a hectic couple of weeks for me and it’s the time of the year when I like to head to Utah. The summer crowds have died down and there is a chill in the air, but it is one of my favorite times to visit the desert southwest. Their is something beautiful about the warm red rock against the deep blue sky and even how the mid-day sun can create some amazing contrasts that are highlighted in monochrome images.  I found this image in my archives and it was just asking to be processed. Hopefully it gives you a flavor for why I love Utah.

I’m heading back to Utah next week to take a short road trip with friend and fellow photographer Ryan Wright. It’s just fun to hit the open road  and loose track of time enjoying God’s beautiful creation.

Fall at the Thomas Moulton Barn

I was noticing that the fall colors are starting to appear here in Colorado.  They days are getting shorter and evenings are getting cooler.  I was looking back over some of last years fall images and came across one here at the Thomas Moulton Barn that I had not yet processed.  The morning sunlight gives off a warm glow to the patina finish on the Thomas Moulton Barn and just seemed to match the fall golden grass around the barn and in the fields surrounding the barn.  There is a warm rustic glow to the scene.

I keep hoping I can get a long weekend to head up to Grand Teton National Park this year, but I just haven’t been able to free up that weekend so far. Maybe a winter trip is in store this year.

The Open Range

Today’s image is a wide panoramic view of the Monument Valley in Utah. This is what I picture in a scene from a western movie. I just need a cowboy on a horse in this scene. The Fisher Towers and La Sal Mountains are in the distance.

I have a busy week in New York next week, so not sure how much time I’ll have to post. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to get out and capture some images in NYC. Have a great weekend!

Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep

It’s a busy week for me so I thought I would bring out the Big Ram today so I can power through my Wednesday.  It’s also the mascot for my Almer Mater, Colorado State University!  Go Rams! This was one of the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep Rams I captured this past fall just outside of Green River, Utah.  Have a great Wednesday!

Big Island View

No, unfortunately I’m not taking you to the Big Island of Hawaii today, but back down to Southern Colorado to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.  I don’t see this image much, but this is the Big Island View along the North Rim of the Black Canyon.  I was just swept away by the steep canyon walls contrasted with the wide open spaces just beyond the wall.  The clouds rolling over added a nice dramatic look to the image.  This is one place I definitely need to do some more exploring next year.  Hopefully I can get down in the canyon next year and do some hiking.

Bullish Memories

My dad and I were driving down Colorado Highway 50 heading home from a long weekend trip fishing down along the Gunnison River (my trip to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison earlier this year) and I was just staring out the window watching the miles pass. I noticed this red barn coming up which started to peak my interest.

There have been many times in the past driving along that I wish I would have captured some sunset, some cloud formation, an abandoned car along the side of the road and I decide to keep driving. Inevitably I start kicking myself for not stopping a few minutes to capture the image.

We approach this red barn and I notice there is this single bull standing out in front of the barn.  What a great scene!  I yell over to my dad to STOP the car.  Dad yells out “What’s wrong?!”  I swing open the door, run out to this field along the side of the road, dSLR in tow and snap this scene.  I think this bull is asking who this nut job is.  I get back to the car and my dad is shaking his head and I’m smiling ear to ear!

This weekend I’ve finally had a chance to really dig through the images from the trip down to the Black Canyon. I can’t believe I passed up this image in processing. My dad’s been asking me for pictures from the trip so I’ve decided to put together a book for him from our trip. It was a special weekend together, that male bonding weekend. This image is going in the book.  It’s just one of those crazy fleeting memories together. Hopefully it brings a smile to his face. I know it brought a smile to my face.

The Open Range

My trip to Green River, Utah felt like an old western movie the whole time I was there.  The southwestern scenes just felt like they came from an old black and white western movie and I felt like John Wayne was going to show up on horseback any minute.  The tall mountain buttes, the open range and a cloudy sunset just felt like it should be in black and white so today’s image is just that, a black and white…monochrome.

Book Cliffs – Mesa County, Colorado

I had a moment to look through some of my photos from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.  My trip to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison was greeted with rain for the first two days so it was a little disappointing for both my photography and for fishing with my dad.  I still managed a few photographs and got in some fishing, but not the ideal conditions for either event.  Dad and I cut our losses on Saturday and decided to drive up to Palisade, Colorado, which is known for their peaches and just venture up into Mesa County.  Nearing Palisade, Colorado I was greeted with these fabulous cliffs and mountains called the Book Cliffs.  The textures and the grains of these cliffs were amazing against the cloudy skies leftover from the storms.  This is one place I have never been and made a note to myself to venture back to this area in the future and do some more exploring.  This photo is pretty much out of the “tin” with very little processing.  I used a circular polarizer to cut away some of the noon day glare and then just did some sharpening, removal of a couple of dust spots and cropped into a 16X9 format in Aperture. My kind of processing for this week.  I’m getting some photographs ready for an upcoming art show and preparing for a trip near Aspen this coming weekend for some fall colors.  I’m not sure I’ll have time to do much more blogging this week other than to share with you some details on the art show coming up later this week.  Have a fantastic week!
